 Why Copy Protect our E-book?
 (what format is it in and the various editions)

The decision we made to copy protect our book was a very difficult one for us to make as we really would like to make it as easy as possible for our customers to get their copy of this book.  However, since it is so easy to copy and distribute electronic files on the internet, all it takes is one dishonest person to do this which would disrupt our ability to provide this book in a timely fashion.  So we found a very simple system, that if you follow your instruction manual, you will be able to easily install your e-book on your computer.  Therefore, thank you for your trust and understanding why we must take this step and we hope that this compromise we must make, will not be the reason whether you obtain your copy or not.

How Does the Copy Protection Work?

In order to validate that you have a legal version of our e-book our copy protection company Digilox, uses two validation methods. 

Internet: For two of our versions (the downloadable e-book or one version that comes on CD), the first time you open your e-book, you must be initially connected to the internet.  This is so the Digilox server can recognize your e-book and validate it.  After this initial validation process, you can disconnect from the internet.  Thereafter, just open your e-book and it will not be necessary for you to be online. There is the ability to relocated your e-book to a different computer however, and when you do this, you will need to be connected to the internet only for the first time. This validation process only takes a few moments.  (Note for the downloadable version of our book, please hold on to your login and password that Digilox emailed to you and don't lose it!!)

To ensure that you are able to connect to the Digilox e-book validation server, we suggest you obtain a copy of a very small test program and run it. If this test programs works properly then you will see a message that your "Connection was Successful".  To get a copy of this test program (called testconnection.exe) right click on the link below:

Floppy Diskette:  One version of our e-book that comes on a CD, uses a special floppy diskette to validate that you have a good copy of our book.  There is no extra cost to get the CD version with or without the floppy but this version does not require that you must be connected to the internet.  It is really a personal choice.

Will I be able to print my E-book?

Yes, in fact we recommend printing it!  You can print the entire book (over 500 pages) or a section of it.  We have included a section in the e-book about printing to help you.

Can I view my E-book on any computer I want?

Yes, but with the way our copy protection works you can only have it on one computer at a time.  Relocating your book to a different computer is easy.  Simple, step-by-step instructions are included with your e-book.

Why are there Different Versions of the E-book?

Due to the size of our e-book (it is about 9 megabytes), we knew that for some people who have a very slow connection to the internet, that this could be a challenge as it might take several hours to download.  Also for many people who have internet access outside the U.S., they are charged by the minute for their internet connectivity.  Therefore we decided to offer a version that can be downloaded from our website and another on a CD or compact disk. 

The reason for the large size of our e-book is due to two factors: First we have designed the e-book to appear exactly as a real printed book that you can buy in the store, and secondly, we have filled the book with a number of pictures and illustrations to support the chapters.   

Please Note: For those who do order our downloadable version from our site, you will have 24 hours to receive your copy of the e-book before this option ends.  Therefore we recommend that only customers with a fast access to the internet order the downloadable version our e-book (via DSL or cable) as this will take about 15 minutes or less to get your copy

For those of you who do not have this fast connection to the internet, the best option is to order your copy on a CD which will include a copy of Adobe Reader® as well.  Of course, we must add shipping and handling to the total price of the CD version of our book but this cost could be far less than what you might be charged for your internet connect time to download it.

The only other consideration related to ordering the CD version is whether your PC has a floppy drive or not.  If it does not, please select the CD version that requires validation via the internet access.

What do You Need to Read the E-book?

To read your e-book, you must have a copy of Adobe Reader® or Adobe Acrobat® release "4", "5", or "6".  The file format of this book is based upon the "PDF" file format created by Adobe Acrobat® even though there is a copy protection program that is wrapped around the e-book (which is why you receive it as an executable file or .exe). After your e-book is validated as a legal copy, Adobe Reader® or Adobe Acrobat® will be brought up on your computer.  If you do not have a copy of Adobe Reader®, we supply one on all of our CD versions and for the downloadable version, you can get a copy from Adobe at: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

(Please Note:  We have found a few problems of our book working completely with Adobe Acrobat instead of the Reader.  Some of the special features are disabled.  If you have a version of Acrobat, please contact us via our email below and we can explain how you will be able to get around these issues.  You can read the book ok but you have to use a strange way to print it. )

Can I read this on my Mac?

If you have a Apple Macintosh Computer, we have been able to test our e-book with customers who use Virtual PC on a Mac and it will work. So if you have this Windows emulation program running on OS System X (possibly OS 9 as well), and have a connection to the internet, you can read our e-book.
